Shravani Mela 2017

Shravani Mela begins every year in the Hindi Month Savan(July-Aug). The month-long holy festival celebrated throughout the Savan month on Baba Baidyanath Temple (also known as Bol-Bam), Deoghar, Jharkhand. This year Mela begins on July 10, 2017 and ends on Aug 7, 2017.

Baba Baidyanath Temple, Deoghar is believed to be the place where Ravana carrying Lord Shiva on his way to Sri Lanka had stopped, betraying the conditions of a non-stop journey. This failed him in his mission of taking the Lord Shiva to Lanka and the Lord remained rooted here and this Shivaling is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams in India.

Every year millions of devotees from India and other countries around the world take Gangajal (holy water of Ganga River) from Sultanganj and showers on Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar. To shower water devotees sets 108 km long walk by sloganeering “Bol-Bam” from Sultanganj to Deoghar. Devotees bear saffron colour dress caring Gangajal are known as “Kanwarias”.

Monday is devoted to Lord Siva. The Mondays in Sharvan month is highly auspicious and Lord Shiva devotees perform the Shravan Somvar Vrat. On every Monday high number of devotees worships Lord Siva at Baba Baidyanath Dham, Deoghar.
